Midnight Oil Productions and NYAC Connectional Ministries present a webinar by Jason Moore -
Both/And: Maximizing Hybrid Worship Experiences For Online and In-Person Audiences
Wednesday, May 12, 6:30-9PM

As we begin to think about reopening our church buildings, we want to consider how we can create worship for two audiences at the same time: those who are in the pews, and those who are on their couches. How do we keep both audiences engaged so that neither one feels like they're spectators?

This new webinar from Jason Moore will explore:

• Re-imagining worship for both/and
• How to create interactive both/and experiences
• Bringing at home and in-person audiences together in real time
• Alternative opportunities for online audiences watching in-person livestreams
• Repurposing in-person worship for online audiences
• Strategies for adapting practices for both/and
• Avoiding letting your groove becoming a rut
• And more

Many of you have participated in Jason's workshops, so you know how creative he is.  This training opportunity is free to any of our NYAC clergy and laity (up to 500).  For more information, take a look at this video. (Click on "Skip Ad" as soon as you are able to.)

To register, please click here. A link to the webinar will be emailed to all registrants a few days before the event.

Native American Ministries Sunday Offering - April 18

The Conference Committee on Native American Ministries (CONAM) invites Annual Conference church participation in this Special Sunday Offering in support of Native American Ministries throughout the United States and in Annual Conferences. Nationally, the offering provides scholarships for Native Americans who attend schools of theology, as well help Annual Conferences develop strong Native American ministries. Our CONAM is an active partner in the Northeast Jurisdiction on Native American Ministries. Within the New York Annual Conference the Committee has supported two New York City programs. The Native American Community House in New York City is a fifty two year old volunteer organization, and is a resource center devoted to intercultural awareness between urban and reservation experiences for people from 72 different Native American tribes. In addition, CONAM helped to underwrite The Safe Harbors Indigenous Collective “Reflections of Native Voices.” These two organizations have provided personal involvement in our Annual Conference events.
The Committee on Native American Ministries participates in an exciting relationship between Camp Quinipet and the Shinnecock Nation in Southampton. A one week summer camp experience was held for children in 2019. The pandemic brought to a halt plans for 2020, which would have included a one week camp experience for Shinnecock children, plus two weekend retreats for youth.  It is now the hope that plans for a renewed relationship between the Shinnecock Nation and Camp Quinipet will be possible in 2021. Our Special Sunday Offering makes possible our Conference Native American ministry relationships nationally and within our Conference.

United Methodist churches in the United States can help refugees and migrants living in their communities thanks to a new grant program from UMCOR. “Mustard Seed Migration Grants,” inspired by the well-known parable about growth, will provide fifty congregations with up to $2,000 in funding to support one-time, community-based service projects in their own cities and towns. Applications are due by May 16, 2021 and require the signatures of the church’s senior pastor and lay leader and bishop or director of connectional ministries.

REMINDER: PPE Still Available

As churches expand their guideline-based openings and ministries, remember that PPE is still available from the NYAC Missions office in support of your efforts. We have disinfectant, sanitizer, gloves, and masks. Gloves and masks may also be used to support, or distribute through, food-based ministries. Contact Trudy Creary (receptionist@nyac.com) at the Conference Center to make arrangements for a pick up.
We are also looking for several sites in each district to serve as distribution sites. At this point, only Bayport UMC is serving in this capacity. It will make distribution to congregations easier.   You may contact Tom Vencuss (tvencuss@nyac.com) to volunteer your church.

  • Do You Need Mission Statement for Your Post-Pandemic Transition Plan? As congregations plan for a future with fewer pandemic-related restrictions, Lovett H. Weems Jr. says they need a standard for assessing various options. Without a clear connection to your primary mission your transition plan could easily be hijacked by those pushing hardest for their point of view or what neighboring churches are doing.  Read more now.
  • There's No Going Back to the Pre-Pandemic Church.  Kay Kotan says many churches feel a natural desire to return to the familiar, comfortable patterns of the past. But churches that embrace this time of disruption as a catalyst for lasting change are most likely to be vital in the post-pandemic world. Read more now.

UMCOR Relief Supply Kits
An important part of an Annual Conference has been the collection of UMCOR Relief Kits: Hygiene, School, and Clean-up Kits. Given the fact that this year’s Conference will once again be virtual, yet recognizing that the need for these supplies will continue, we will not be collecting or receiving supplies as in the past. Instead, we are encouraging churches to “assemble” virtual kits by collecting funds in the amount of buckets, hygiene or school kits. A listing of supplies and the total cost of individual kits may be found at https://umcmission.org/umcor-relief-supplies following the links.
Funds may be sent directly to UMCOR (included in the link) or to the Annual Conference Center, 20 Soundview Avenue, White Plains, NY, 10606, attention Fran Collins. Checks should be made out to the NYAC with UMCOR Relief Kits in the memo line.
Undesignated donations may also be made to UMCOR Disaster Relief or to specific missions through the Advance https://umcmission.org/give-to-umcor/.
This is also a great way to educate congregations about Mission and encourage churches to participate in supporting this vital ministry.
