The Conference Committee on Native American Ministries (CONAM) invites Annual Conference church participation in this Special Sunday Offering in support of Native American Ministries throughout the United States and in Annual Conferences. Nationally, the offering provides scholarships for Native Americans who attend schools of theology, as well help Annual Conferences develop strong Native American ministries. Our CONAM is an active partner in the Northeast Jurisdiction on Native American Ministries. Within the New York Annual Conference the Committee has supported two New York City programs. The Native American Community House in New York City is a fifty two year old volunteer organization, and is a resource center devoted to intercultural awareness between urban and reservation experiences for people from 72 different Native American tribes. In addition, CONAM helped to underwrite The Safe Harbors Indigenous Collective “Reflections of Native Voices.” These two organizations have provided personal involvement in our Annual Conference events.
The Committee on Native American Ministries participates in an exciting relationship between Camp Quinipet and the Shinnecock Nation in Southampton. A one week summer camp experience was held for children in 2019. The pandemic brought to a halt plans for 2020, which would have included a one week camp experience for Shinnecock children, plus two weekend retreats for youth. It is now the hope that plans for a renewed relationship between the Shinnecock Nation and Camp Quinipet will be possible in 2021. Our Special Sunday Offering makes possible our Conference Native American ministry relationships nationally and within our Conference.
