Dismantling Racism:
Lent Devotions by our Bishops

Each week of Lent and every day of Holy Week, a United Methodist bishop will offer a short devotion. This week, Bishop Christian Alsted, of the Nordic and Baltic Episcopal Area of the Northern Europe and Eurasia Central Conference, brings a reflection. This series is another step on our journey of repentance, reconciliation and action.  Learn more

25th Anniversary of Order of Deacons

The UMC Order of Deacons will celebrate its 25th anniversary this year with an exciting slate of virtual events, which will provide a deeper understanding of the role of Deacons in our UM Church.  The Order of Deacons was established at the 1996 UM General Conference.

There will be a Convocation event at Garrett Seminary, featuring Rev. Dr. Mary Elizabeth Moore (former Dean of The School of Theology at Boston University), a presentation by Margaret Crain and Jack Seymour (authors of “A Deacon’s Heart,” who have helped define and shape the role and discernment of countless Deacons), a worship service, and a Social Justice panel (NYAC's Rev. Doris Dalton is one of the panelists). Registration is free.  For more information, please click here.
In addition, there are Deacon Affinity Groups, two of which are being facilitated by NYAC candidates for Deacon's Orders: Betty Lynn Gannon (Social Workers group), and Antona Brent Smith (Anti-Blackness in Racism group).  For a complete list of affinity groups and contact/registration information, please see the document attached to this email (below).

REMINDER: PPE Still Available

As churches expand their guideline-based openings and ministries, remember that PPE is still available from the NYAC Missions office in support of your efforts. We have disinfectant, sanitizer, gloves, and masks. Gloves and masks may also be used to support, or distribute through, food-based ministries. Contact Trudy Creary (receptionist@nyac.com) at the Conference Center to make arrangements for a pick up.
We are also looking for several sites in each district to serve as distribution sites. At this point, only Bayport UMC is serving in this capacity. It will make distribution to congregations easier.   You may contact Tom Vencuss (tvencuss@nyac.com) to volunteer your church.

It's UMCOR Sunday All Month Long

We celebrated UMCOR Sunday this year on March 14, 2021, but online we are celebrating all month long! UMCOR Sunday unites the church in community, invites the participation of each and every person, and underscores our shared commitment as people of God to keep walking together in mission for the benefit of those in need.
In the face of 2020’s unprecedented disasters, people like you stepped up.  To give online throughout the month of March, please click here.

UMCOR Relief Supply Kits
An important part of an Annual Conference has been the collection of UMCOR Relief Kits: Hygiene, School, and Clean-up Kits. Given the fact that this year’s Conference will once again be virtual, yet recognizing that the need for these supplies will continue, we will not be collecting or receiving supplies as in the past. Instead, we are encouraging churches to “assemble” virtual kits by collecting funds in the amount of buckets, hygiene or school kits. A listing of supplies and the total cost of individual kits may be found at https://umcmission.org/umcor-relief-supplies following the links.
Funds may be sent directly to UMCOR (included in the link) or to the Annual Conference Center, 20 Soundview Avenue, White Plains, NY, 10606, attention Fran Collins. Checks should be made out to the NYAC with UMCOR Relief Kits in the memo line.
Undesignated donations may also be made to UMCOR Disaster Relief or to specific missions through the Advance https://umcmission.org/give-to-umcor/.
This is also a great way to educate congregations about Mission and encourage churches to participate in supporting this vital ministry.
