Congregational Care Ministry Training
A ten-hour course

Organized and hosted by The Church of the
Village (UM)
Led by Rev. Dr. Penny Gadzini, Rev. Dr. Arthur Pressley, Anne Hughes-Hinnen, and Rev. Jeff Wells

What: This course provides a basic introduction to visitation and care ministry. Participants will develop
listening skills, be introduced to the basics of visitation, ministry with the sick, dying, and grieving,
care for those with addictions and in recovery, and explore community resources.
Where: The Chapel of the Beloved Community at The Church of the Village
201 W. 13th St., New York, NY 10011
(at 7th Ave.)  (212) 243-5470
When: Four 2-1/2 hour sessions – Sundays, Sept. 23, Oct. 14, Oct. 28, and Nov. 18, 12:30 to 3 pm

Why: From the earliest times, the followers of Jesus were inspired by his ministry to provide care and healing prayer for one another and to all those in need. Over recent decades, there has been an increasing desire for trained lay persons to participate in caring ministries.
Intentional lay congregational care promotes spiritual renewal and church vitality. A team of trained persons volunteering their time greatly enhances the congregation’s ability to meet hurting people with hope, companionship, and love.
Who: This program is intended for lay persons who yearn to serve in caring and healing ministry.

September 29, 2018   10AM to 1PM

This Safe Sanctuaries Workshop is designed for congregations who do not have a written Safe Sanctuaries Policy or who need a refresher on editing their policy. The workshop prepares a core team of 4 – 5 to work with the congregation to write a policy, as well as providing information on how to train trustees, teachers, parents and pastors on the implementation of that policy.
Each church should have at least one copy of  the book Safe Sanctuaries: Reducing the Risk of Child Abuse in the Church by Joy Thornburg Melton.  You may also wish to have a copy of the book Safe Sanctuaries - Older Adults: The Church Reponds to Abuse, Neglect, and Exploitation of Older Adults.

"...in conflict, as in magic, the real action occurs where people are not looking... parties in conflict all wait on the same solution: they wait for the other party to change... Our problems...are not what they seem. This is at once our challenge and our                                                       opportunity."

- From the preface of The Anatomy of Peace
