Dear Friends,
Who can find a virtuous woman? Proverbs 31:10
Spring is in the air! Let us embrace the opportunity to bloom, and remember that you are God's treasure. Know your worth and do not settle for less than you deserve. Women have been known as the backbone of churches. It was the United Methodist Women who led the church in missions, service, leadership development, and educational opportunities that have sustained the church.
Whether or not we gave birth to a child, we are often the ones caring for and nurturing them. We teach them their first words, and we are there to comfort their first skinned knee. Let's not forget all of the life lessons, formal and informal, imparted to children: "Do this. Don't do that."
One of those lessons was undoubtedly: “love one another just as I have loved you.” Now more than ever, we have to show all of God’s children that love is the way. Not whom you love, but how you love. We love because God first loved us. Be that virtuous woman, or man, the one who stands for justice, the one who seeks peace, the one who loves with the heart of a servant! The one who believes that love conquers all!
Use the Festival of the Christian Home and Mother’s Day as an opportunity to rekindle the importance of the quality and sacredness of all relationships, especially those fragile ones that need mending, growth, and depth.
May you bloom wherever you are planted.
Blessings,
Denise Smartt Sears

Day of Dance Conference 2017
It is that time again...time to register for the Day of Dance Conference.
This year the Day of Dance Conference will be held at St. Paul's United Methodist Church at 3714 Avenue D, Brooklyn, NY 11203, on May 5-6, 2017, from 6-9 and 9-4 respectively.
The Day of Dance Workshop is designed to teach churches about the meaning and purpose of liturgical dance, and to provide basics in choreography to participants. This workshop is open to everyone including those with physical challenges who may have doubts about their ability to participate in dance. The workshop offers courses for the novice; and for those who are immediate or professional dancers in addition to those with limited abilities to use what they have to worship God through dance. Another workshop goal is to prepare those who agree to participate in the NYAC with choreography.

We look forward to our time together. Dinner, Breakfast and Lunch will be provided.

Volunteer in Mission
Over the past few years, a number of us have been blessed to be part of a mission team to Nicaragua. Once again this year, the New York Annual Conference is organizing a VIM trip to Nicaragua to work with Acción Médica Cristiana, a mission agency that is supported in part by the United Methodist Church. The dates of the trip are August 4-13, 2017.

Disaster Response Ministry Retreat and Work Week-end(s)
Calling all ERTs, Long Term Recovery volunteers, DESC-trained personnel – join us for a retreat and work weekend at Camp Olmstead, Thursday, May 11 through Saturday, May 13. During the day we will put our disaster response skills to work, assisting with work projects, and during the evening spend time in fellowship and disaster response-related discussions and workshops. The camp will be hosting us so there is no cost to volunteers. In preparation, we are looking for several persons with construction/building backgrounds to visit the camp and begin to put together a scope of work for each project. Please contact Tom Vencuss (tvencuss@nyac.com) or 860-324-1424 if you are interested.
We have also been in touch with Brooke and Justin at Quinipet and we are looking to put together a similar retreat/work weekend there. More details about this to come.

Methodists In New Directions (MIND) is committed to working for full LGBTQ inclusion in all areas of the life of the United Methodist Church. In doing so, we believe that it is vital to maintain the greatest transparency possible. We strive to make our actions and our intentions as clear and as public as possible—our integrity demands no less. In this spirit, we have added each of you to our weekly newsletter mailing list, so that you may be informed about our activities throughout the Annual Conference. Our intention is to keep the dialogue open, honest, and candid with each of you.
MIND will be holding a meeting on May 7th at St. Paul's UMC and Cheshire UMC. We would like to extend an invitation to all of you to attend one of these meetings, whether in your district or as is convenient. Conversation and worship with laity and clergy who share a passion for welcoming and nurturing all God’s children may offer a new insight into the thoughts, hopes and concerns of United Methodists in your districts.
